Everytime I hear Black folk, use the term “minority” I cringe. It is far to ambiguous……
“WHAT IS WRONG WITH USING THE TERM MINORITY INSTEAD OF BLACK?
The term Minority is an inaccurate term generally assumed to include Blacks, Hispanics, other immigrants, women, gays and other identifiable segments of American society. It is inaccurate because women are not a minority population, Hispanics most often are Whites who speak Spanish and identify culturally with Spanish-speaking countries.
The term Minority equates the historical legally imposed problems of Black America to contemporary problems of immigrants and other groups. The use of the term Minority allows policy makers and others to ignore the problems of Black America by blending and burying their issues. It is such a broad and ambiguous terms that most people would fit into some Minority category at one time.
Often a Black problem gets a Minority solution, a travesty committed by Blacks and Whites alike. For instance, if it is documented that Blacks own fewer broadcast stations, a proposal to increase Minority ownership does not solve the problem of lower Black ownership. It may make people more comfortable, but a solution that seeks to increase Minority ownership does not increase Black ownership, the original problem.
The Great Society Programs are another example. They were intended to help Blacks in response to the Civil Rights Movement coming out of segregation. That focus lasted a short time. The designated funds were quickly redirected, from Blacks to Minorities.” Dr. Claud Anderson
